About Me

My photo
Southeast, Florida, United States
I've had a love affair with books since I was a little girl. Once I discovered that stories could take me to amazing worlds where heroes and heroines could tackle insurmountable odds and yet live happily ever after, I was hooked. My overactive imagination always questions "what if?" and I often daydream about scenarios for the next story. Living in South Florida is a dream I fulfilled. For many years now, the balmy breezes, palm trees and surf crashing upon the shoreline have satisfied my soul. They often show up as settings for my stories. I used to say that I'd try anything once, but that was before some suggested skydiving, mountain climbing and swimming with sharks. Nowadays, I prefer the comfort of my chair in front of my computer where the most dangerous thing I face is writer's block. I let my characters tackle the impossible challenges and all I have to do is make sure they have a happy ending. I welcome readers to explore the fantastic world of my imagination where anything is possible and most likely will happen. Look for my books and e-books at Ellora's Cave, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other fine e-tailers

Tina Donahue Has Hijacked My Blog Today!!!! Have a look!

Tina Donahue has officially hijacked my blog today.

Getting to Know You…

One of the things I most enjoy in a good romance are the moments following the hero and heroine’s first meeting, a time charged with expectation that makes my heart skip a beat or brings a smile. I also love the characters’ thoughts during these scenes whether they’re downright lusty, tentative or a mixture of both. I find it makes them human, vulnerable, likeable.

In my newest erotic romance, Sensual Stranger, I wanted to portray the intense attraction between Toni and Zach, while having both of them hold back due to their respective circumstances.

Here’s the blurb and an excerpt to show what I mean.

BLURB:

Into his life she came—wanting…willing…wanton

It’s no ordinary morning when Toni Starr arrives at Zach’s garage. Flat broke, with a past she won’t share, Toni’s instantly taken by such a potently virile man. Direct and unashamed, she tells him she’s a motorcycle performance artist who needs work and knows motors.

Zach knows women, and Toni’s unlike any he’s met. Lushly sensuous, exceedingly assured, she’d easily be his match in business and bed. A provocative challenge that stirs him as nothing has since losing his wife. A chance he’s reluctant to take, offering no more than a month’s employment, then she’ll have to be on her way.

The hours tick by. Each word and glance intensifies their denied yet escalating desire, forcing them to surrender to passion and Toni’s need for Zach’s dominance. Driven by carnal hunger, conquered by yearning, they face the unforeseen truth of Toni’s past and a future neither of them expected.

EXCERPT:

(In this scene, Zach has initially refused to hire Toni, a job she needs desperately. To ease the blow and because he senses how hungry she is, he’s offered to buy her breakfast.)

As he studied her, his expression changed. He seemed uncertain suddenly, as though he’d lost his train of thought. Clearing his throat, apparently remembering what he’d meant to say, he asked, “What do you like to eat? There’s a diner to the right with the usual breakfast fare or a pancake house to the left.”

With each choice he’d offered, the tips of his fingers tightened gently on her elbow.

All too conscious of his touch, Toni tried to distract herself. She glanced up and down the street at the wooden buildings painted in bright primary colors…firecracker reds, vivid blues, buttercup yellows made the area cheery and welcoming. Most of the architecture sported an old West look with flat fronts and fancy gold lettering on the windows.

Her lids finally slid down at the warmth of Zach’s hand and the wind’s brief caress. On the heated, dry air, Toni caught something she hadn’t before…the exquisite aroma of bacon and cinnamon. Inhaling deeply, she just about purred, “Do you smell that? Where’s it coming from?”

“The diner.”

“Oh, there. Please.”

Zach’s voice rumbled with pleasure. “Good choice.”

Forcing her eyes to open, Toni saw his smile. Not wanting to stare too obviously, she glanced past him at the hard blue sky. There wasn’t a cloud in sight to mar its perfection, only a group of black birds winging their way toward the mountains.

Hand on her arm, Zach led her up the street to the diner, his stride slow.

Because of his leg? Toni glanced at it.

He asked, “How long have you been here?”

“I don’t know.” She looked up. “Where’s here?”

He chuckled.

Her heart made a funny leap at having made him laugh and the sexy crinkles at the corners of his eyes.

He explained, “You’re in Arizona.”

“Yeah, I know that. I meant, where’s here?” With her free hand, she pointed down. “This town, city, whatever. I didn’t see any signs coming in.” She’d been too busy searching for a garage and stopped when she found his. “What’s it called?”

“Indulgence.”

“Get out.”

Grinning, he inclined his head toward the other side of the street.

Toni looked, reading the storefront windows she hadn’t noticed. There was Indulgence Gifts, Indulgence Ice Cream Parlor, Indulgence Western Wear.

“There has to be a story behind that name,” she said.

He pulled his gaze from her and regarded the sidewalk ahead. “A few years back the city council consulted with a marketing firm about ways to bring in more tourist dollars. The firm concluded that a good start would be changing the name from Keanyville.” His smile returned as he shook his head. “They said Indulgence sounded like a town in an old Clint Eastwood movie and people would flock here.”

Toni’s gaze swept the cars on the streets. It wasn’t exactly rush hour in New York, but she noticed the parking spaces filling up and what seemed to be tourists glancing in the shop windows. “Sounds like a plan.” She looked over. “So nothing wild goes on here?”

Zach paused at a street corner. A dark blue Chrysler Sebring moved past the stop sign slower than a sloth. The elderly driver had a face mapped with wrinkles that deepened as she squinted at Toni. Clearly not liking what she saw, she settled her displeased frown on Zach.

With an easy smile, he dipped his head in greeting.

The woman kept glancing over her shoulder at them as her vehicle rolled across the street.

Zach led Toni to the other side. Curiosity rang in his voice. “Define wild.”

Toni swung her head to him. He kept his gaze straight ahead, leading her up the block.

Define wild, he’d said.

Her thoughts turned inward to the men she’d known, all of them out for a good time—gambling, boozing, fucking—each unconcerned with the future. As far as Toni was concerned, that made them more stupid than anything, afraid to grow up.

Wild was a man risking his heart, falling so hard there’d be no chance of him recovering, holding her close every night, loving her to distraction…standing at her side, giving her a family and home.

Struggling to keep yearning from her voice, she said, “You tell me.”

Meri tried to take it all in as they entered the huge, crowded hall and followed the usher to a table right near the stage. Voices filled the air and excitement flowed through the room like electricity. The band tuned their instruments and the lights flickered. They had arrived just in time. A cocktail waitress stopped by to take their drink order and Meri was grateful that she had time to purchase a strong drink to calm her nerves.

An expectant hush filled the room as the band played “See See Rider”. The curtain rose and Meri’s heart did a flip-flop when she saw Johnny enter the stage. The crowd burst into applause and screams. Several girls rushed to the edge of the stage and were held back by security guards.

Attired in a replica of the white sequined jumpsuit that Elvis wore during his 1972 “Aloha from Hawaii” concert, Johnny epitomized his idol. When he belted out the tune, she closed her eyes and smiled. Yes, that was exactly as she remembered him, without all the glitz and glamour.

“That’s him, right?” Jennie said, squeezing Meri’s hand. Jennie had to yell to be heard over the loud music.

She nodded. His figure had acquired the defined musculature of a man, but other than that, he had not changed much since she saw him last. “Yes definitely, although his hair is much darker than it was back then and he never wore highly starched collars or that many rings.”

“Wow! He looks and sounds authentic. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that is the real Elvis on stage. And he’s so handsome. Meri, if it doesn’t work out between the two of you, can I have a shot at him?” Cybil winked.

“We’ll know soon enough,” Meri said nonchalantly, yet the thought gnawed at her for the rest of the concert.

During the next hour, Meri fidgeted in her seat, trying to concentrate on the music but always conscious of the fact that when his performance was over, he would be coming to see her. When he sang, “I’ll Remember You”, Meri swore he found her in the audience and sang directly to her. Tears stung her eyes. Does he remember me?

Meri chewed her nail, contemplating the handsome man on stage. What if he doesn’t still share the same fetish for stockings that I have? A shiver of trepidation slid down her back. If the answer was no, it would be a deal breaker, despite how strongly they felt toward one another years ago. She knew it deep inside. Indeed, it was the reason she had agreed to this trip; she needed to satisfy her curiosity.

She had been searching for years for the one who shared her passion, for a relationship that accepted and incorporated her stocking fetish. Anything less was unacceptable.

After his last song, he took a bow and the audience’s applause was deafening. Girls once again rushed to the edge of the stage, eager to shake his hand and offering him a tissue to wipe the sweat from his brow. He was gracious, but seemed preoccupied, searching over the audience’s heads to locate her seat.

Jennie stood and waved to him. At five-foot-ten, she hovered over many of the people surrounding them and was able to catch his attention. He looked visibly relieved to discover her and excused himself from the tangle of arms wanting to snare him.

Jennie grabbed her purse and tugged at Cybil to stand alongside her. “I think this is our cue to head to the casino for some fun of our own. Come on, Cybil. Let’s ride the Monorail.” She linked her arm to Cybil’s and smiled at Meri.

“If you need us, we’re only a phone call away. I’ll have my cell phone on vibrate and we’ll meet you wherever you want. If we don’t hear from you, we’ll assume you’ve got plans for the night.” She winked and a wide smile creased her face.

“Good luck!” Cybil tossed her a kiss as she joined Jennie.

Meri watched her friends blend into the crowd leaving the room. She turned around and swallowed hard. Johnny was walking toward her. This was it…the moment she had been waiting for during the last fifteen years. Now that it had arrived, she didn’t know if she had the strength to endure it.

Weakness set into her bones. The temperature in the room seemed to have risen and she wiped droplets of perspiration off of her lip. She squirmed in her seat, nervous and anxious to meet him.

As he drew closer, Meri held her breath. Her vision focused only on him and suddenly there was no one else in the room but the two of them. The background noises faded. Nothing mattered but the handsome man heading toward her. He closed the distance between them, and with every step he took, Meri heard her heart beating in her ears. Her mouth became dry and she took a quick sip of her drink.

Oh God! Where are my friends now? I need someone to pinch me and tell me this is really happening.

Then he was standing before her—the man of her dreams, the man who had told her a million or so years ago that he loved her more than anything else.

“Hello, Meri.”
